Fortnite Store [Once] To accept[ed] Monero (XMR)

On New Year's Day, rumors were circulating on the cryptic social channels that Fortnite, the world-famous "Battle Royale" video game that had earned millions and millions of dollars, had started accepting Monero payments (XMR) on its official store of merchandising. After the diffusion of this hearsay, Riccardo Spagni, an important South African crypt and a member of the core of Monero, went on Twitter to explain this event in the sector.

Spagni, which is part of the "Magical Crypto Friends" podcast, has confirmed that XMR payments have been accepted on the lucky Fortnite Store through integration with the GloBee pro-encryption payment processor. Referring to the video game, he joked on Twitter saying that "now you can buy that sweet Durrr Burger outfit without your friends, family or colleagues who judge you", evidently touching the privacy features of XMR.

It is interesting to note that with this integration the payment processor has limited cryptocurrency transactions to XMR, although it accepts payments via Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Decred and XRP. When this news broke out, a series of encrypted enthusiasts turned to social media channels to express their excitement, as the integration into one aspect of Fortnite, a game that attracts millions of viewers on Twitch day after day, it is evidently an optimistic signal.

Many optimists have said that this integration could trigger a new stunt of adoption for cryptocurrencies, while others (a little more cynical) have noticed that the adoption of XMR by Fortnite would push the asset higher, but not the broader market.

Not so fast, says Epic Games Founder

While GloBee's integration was successful for several days, with preliminary reports indicating that crypto-friendly users have actually carried out XMR transactions, Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite and its facets, he stated that the acceptance of XMR was "Brief" and an "accident". Through a Twitter thread that picked up traction in the cryptosphere just recently, the pre-eminent programmer explained that "somewhere along the way" a stranger from Epic's partners has enabled the Monero payment option.

As such, the option to pay via XMR was quickly closed. However, it is not all negative and negative for the cryptocurrency community. Through the medium of the aforementioned Twitter thread, Sweeney went on to reveal that "many of us at Epic (implying that it is included)," are big fans of decentralized ledger technologies.

And while Epic employees can be believers, Sweeney noted that progress needs to be made on "volatility and fraud-proofness" before bringing innovation to the public, especially to young demographics who attend their flagship product in Fortnite. He added that despite rumors, Epic currently has no official crypto-centric partner, nor plans for a solid foray into this sector.

It is unclear which Fortnite invocation in the crypto world or blockchain would imply, but if it were to happen, many optimists in this budding field believe that they will take the form of a register-based token, which would bring the concept of digital resources to the mainstream.
