“We are aware of reports from Denmark about several people infected with the mink coronavirus, with some genetic changes in the virus,” tweeted WHO, whose European regional office is based in Copenhagen.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported this Thursday 5-N that it has contacted Danish authorities to find out the details of the expected massacre of millions of mink after detecting a coronavirus mutation in these animals.
“We are aware of reports from Denmark about several people infected with the mink coronavirus, with some genetic changes in the virus,” tweeted WHO, whose European regional office is based in Copenhagen.
“We are in contact with the Danish authorities to find out more about this event,” adds the UN agency.
The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, announced Wednesday that up to 17 million of these animals will be euthanized and that the measure has been taken as a precaution and responsibility towards the Danes and people around the world.
Danish authorities have reported twelve cases of coronavirus with a mutation in humans and that the same mutated virus has been found in five cases of mink farms – of which Denmark is the largest producer in the world – in the north of the country.
Frederiksen said the government has data on this mutation indicating that it weakens the human body’s ability to create antibodies, which could question the effectiveness of vaccines currently being developed against COVID-19.
The minks that will be slaughtered for this reason are distributed in about a thousand farms and the Danish authorities have argued that the implementation of the decision is “a complex initiative”.
