Validators abandon Ethereum 2.0 testnets as mainnet release approaches

If participation in testnet is any indication, Ethereum 2.0 validators are looking forward to reality as the network kickoff looms.

This is taken up by the newer Zinken testnet, which has just under 66% needed to function properly as of Monday, according to beaconcha.in. Those testnets – set to put into practice the Eth 2.0 Phase 0 launch this fall – were launched in September and October, respectively.

“Medalla got into a finality issue again due to user confusion as to which testnet they should run. Unfortunately, many users have abandoned Medalla for Zinken, ”Preston Van Loon, head of the Prysmatic Labs team, said in a message to CoinDesk.

Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains are similar to political elections: the coin holders in the wallet act like politicians, and every transaction must be voted on in what is called validation. Furthermore, a sufficient number of politicians must stand for the vote to count in what is called “finality”. Neither Medalla nor Zinken currently have enough votes to do so.

The low participation rates on the testnet are mirrored by the rhetoric of the Eth 2.0 developers saying they are ready for the start of Phase 0 of Eth 2.0. For example, ConsenSys Eth 2.0 developer Ben Edgington called on developers to release the deposit agreement in a CoinDesk Op-Ed last week.

In a blog, Edgington also said he was “expecting the deposit agreement news overnight” and that the customer teams were basically “okay.”
