Amazon has decided not to order a second season of Utopia, his direct adaptation to the British drama series, written by Gone girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn. The series, starring John Cusack, Sasha Lane, and Rainn Wilson, premiered on September 25 with so-so reviews and had a smooth run.

Utopia follows a group of young adults who meet online and are mercilessly pursued by an obscure deep state organization after they come into possession of an almost mythical cult underground graphic novel. Within the pages of the comic, they discover conspiracy theories that may actually be real and are forced into the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

The Amazon adaptation was a co-production between Endemol Shine North America / Kudos and Amazon Studios. Executive producers alongside Flynn were Jessica Rhoades, Sharon Hall, Karen Wilson and Dennis Kelly.

An American version of the British 2013-14 series Utopia, created by Dennis Kelly and produced by Endemol Shine Group’s UK production studio, Kudos, it was previously in the works for HBO in 2015 with David Fincher and Flynn. (Fincher, who was originally assigned to direct and executive production, asked Flynn to write the series having just worked with her on the film. Gone girl, which he directed from a screenplay he had written based on his book.) The series was in pre-production, and Fincher and Flynn were rehearsing with the cast which included Rooney Mara, Colm Feore, Eric McCormack, Dallas Roberts and Jason Ritter , when it revealed after Fincher and HBO failed to agree on a budget.
