Oleksandr Usyk ignored Derek Chisora’s size and power
Anthony Joshua has “nothing to worry about” at Oleksandr Usyk if the former cruiseweight king stays en route to a world heavyweight title fight, says Carl Froch.
The Ukrainian star is the mandatory WBO challenger for Joshua, but Usyk must first prove his heavyweight credentials against Derek Chisora on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Sky Sports seasoned Froch was impressed with Usyk’s sublime abilities, but wonders if he has the size and power to disturb unified champion Joshua.

“I don’t think AJ will be worried,” Froch said Sky Sports: “He will observe it, probably thinking to himself: ‘It’s not big enough for me. I have size and scope.’ He’ll be quietly confident, AJ, I think.

“I really think AJ has nothing to worry about in Usyk. I need to see how well Usyk performs against Chisora, before I can mention him in the same breath as AJ. I’m not giving him any heavyweight credibility yet, because I don’t have seen nothing.
“Joshua is not worried about going in there with someone who is as big and strong as him, who will support him and try to KO him. If there is any concern there, he will be more concerned about Usyk’s technical ability and the fact that it could be a bit of a standoff.

“If it’s going to be a technical duel then it could be a concern, because Usyk is so technically good, so talented.
“But I think AJ will think, ‘I’m just going to use my size and strength, and after two rounds of a jabbing match, I’m going to shut it down and step on it.’
“His coach Rob McCracken will tell him: ‘Support this guy, he’s 6’3, he’s not big, he’s not heavy and strong like you.’
“He can use his perks and crush him, get him out of there.”
Usyk hopes to emulate a small group of fighters who have successfully reached multiple dimensions to challenge champions in the top division, though Froch has raised doubts that Usyk can pick up all of the world titles.

“It’s a superior top cruiserweight, but there aren’t many cruiserweights that go up and transition to heavyweight and do well,” Froch said.
“David Haye was good at cruiserweight. He wasn’t big enough.
“Evander Holyfield did, but he had time to put on the weight. If you want to go back all the way to Michael Spinks’ ‘The Jinx’, who beat Larry Holmes twice after moving from light heavyweights, you can go back as that.
“But there aren’t many who pass by the cruiser and really dominate. Holyfield is probably the best example.”
