More than 10,000 turkeys will be slaughtered on a British farm after a bird flu outbreak was confirmed by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The disease was the H5N8 strain.

The flu has been identified among 10,500 turkeys raised on a farm in the north of England, Defra said on Saturday, with all phalluses to be eliminated to prevent a spread.

Public Health England (PHE) said the public health risk from the virus is very low.

“Bird flu has been confirmed on a commercial turkey farm near Northallerton in North Yorkshire,” said chief veterinarian Christine Middlemiss.

“PHE has confirmed that the risk to public health is very low and the Food Standards Agency warns that avian flu poses a very low risk to food safety for UK consumers.”
