On Tuesday, a terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya, killed at least 21 people. Jason Spindler, one of the victims, was one of the survivors of the Al Qaeda attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
The man, who turned 41 on Monday, turned out to be one of Al Shabab's victims, nearly 18 years after surviving one of the world's terrorist attacks.
But Jason was not just a survivor, he was also responsible for removing several bodies from the rubble.
According to one of Jason's colleagues, as quoted by The Washington Post, while many were trying to get away quickly from the debris left by the collapses of the towers, the American, who was an employee of investment banks, did the opposite and started removing the bodies he was meeting.
"This is exactly the kind of person he is in. When we hear explosions or blows, many people immediately start to escape, his instinct was the opposite – he jumps in that direction," he said.
However, Jason would eventually be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but this time his story would have a different ending.
"We all miss so much, it's so sad that such a young and stimulating person has been carried away by terrorism," she told Sarah Spindler in a statement to NBC.
Jason's family will travel to Kenya to collect the body. Monday will be a free ceremony.
