The largest Israeli cargo shipping company Zim has opened its blockchain platform for electronic bills of lading (eB / Ls) to all customers in certain sectors. The news release of Global TradeWinds reported the news today, January 14th.

Following a pilot success of its eB / Ls blockchain platform that lasted more than a year, the shipping company said that blockchain can not only replace the paper processes that currently exist, but also improve the flow of work conducted via e-mail. mail, fax, and other channels.

According to the TradeWinds report, two recent transactions on the platform were successfully conducted in less than two hours each – unlike several days or weeks that the process usually requires – with the electronic bills of lading delivered via the blockchain-based system .

As part of the new Zim initiative, blockchain-based transactions will be open to all customers, with particular attention to Asian, South African, North American and Mediterranean countries during the first quarter.

Eyal Ben-Amram, Zim's chief information officer, said that maximizing digitization is part of a company strategy.

According to the Alphaliner shipping data provider, Zim is currently the eleventh largest container operator in the world for the annual volume of goods transported.

Last year, a subsidiary of a major operator of the United Arab Emirates sea port, Abu Dhabi Ports, launched an international blockchain pilot with the port of Antwerp to provide better monitoring of goods and improve the flow of trade and supply chains between UAE and Belgium.

In September 2018, a major UK port operator, British Ports, signed an agreement with the digital logistics operator Marine Transport International to develop a blockchain-based platform for port logistics to reduce the amount of manual management of data.
