After just over two years of development, a new form of gambling will be released to the Ethereum world on the mainnet on Sunday: hamster-powered ball racing.
Promoted by Mia, a female djungarian hamster or “winter white dwarf” and her trusty hamster wheel, the project, dubbed “Mia & the Marbles”, is an automated platform of marbles racing and group gambling of independent developers.
While the concept behind the design may seem… outlandish, in an interview with Cointelegraph the “M&M” development team revealed how carefully the racing platform was thought out.
“We ensure competitions that are reasonably fair, live and easily verifiable,” the developers said. “We can guarantee that the races will take place in real time and are not pre-recorded. We do this with our live video stream showing the first 8 bits of the current Ethereum blockhash physically on track with 8 moving pegs. A high rung stands for 1, a low rung for 0 “
The team says there is also a refund feature for races that don’t deliver a valid result after two days.
While Mia & the Marbles may strike some as a thought experiment or how a moonshot hackathon come to life, the developers say M&M is demonstrably inspired by a passion for gaming.
“We have always loved the idea of blockchain gambling projects. But unfortunately, scams are not uncommon in the low-regulated crypto space,” the team said. “So we were brainstorming ideas with the goal of making the demonstrable equity component easy for anyone to understand, while also being fun!”
As a colleague, the developers report that Mia is exceptional. There was a tough time at first – when she was a puppy, Mia enjoyed nibbling the developers’ fingers – but these days she’s always ready to produce. While many DAO-governed protocols have to worry about incentive structures and the possibility that another protocol might steal their talent via fusion, Mia happily runs her wheel up to 5 miles per day.
“Hamsters are naturally very active and travel long distances at night to gather food,” the development team explained.
In the future, there will be more well-developed tracks and possible “championship” brackets for marbles, and the developers eventually intend to continue building towards fun and fair games on Ethereum.
“We strongly believe that adding real world randomness to crypto gambling solutions can greatly increase the trust players have in these products. We want to contribute to a fair world.”
