Honored doctor of Russia, chief scientific editor of the Vrachu.ru service Mikhail Kagan, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, spoke about the negative consequences of the uncontrolled use of vitamin D, to which many Russians paid attention during the coronavirus pandemic .

Kagan confirmed that Russia is in an area of low insolation in the winter. This is why, with the onset of cold weather, many people are deficient in vitamin D. However, this does not mean that such a supplement should be consumed in high doses.

A deficiency of this substance in the body can lead to the development of a wide variety of diseases, including cardiovascular ones and even Alzheimer’s disease. However, the direct effect of vitamin D on the formation of these and other disorders has not been proven. The main problem today also lies in the fact that many people believe that it is the lack of a vitamin that can lead to complications during coronavirus infection. There is also information that people with vitamin D deficiency are more vulnerable to disease.

“The effect of vitamin D has been studied in patients with acute respiratory infections, including the flu. Numerous controlled studies have shown a reduced risk of disease with regular vitamin D intake, especially in people who have previously had a vitamin D deficiency. However, with the same flu, the value of vitamin D in preventing severe cases of disease has not been confirmed, ”said the expert.

Kagan recalled that COVID-19 is still being studied and, to date, it has not yet been possible to gather a sufficient evidence base for the substance’s effect on the human body during coronavirus.

“It is not yet clear how to interpret the identification of widespread vitamin D deficiency in patients with severe disease. Is this a coincidence, a background condition or a provocative factor? The exact answers to these questions have yet to be obtained, “the doctor said.

The doctor recommended not self-medicating, using vitamin D and other supplements uncontrollably. Otherwise, with an overdose of this element, a person’s condition can only worsen. The best option for Kagan is the delivery of tests and blood tests for a lack of vitamin D. If necessary, the level of the substance can be adjusted with the help of drugs.

Earlier, LIVE24 reported on how to help avoid coronavirus infection from Gennady Onishchenko. He urged the Russians to take a closer look at their health.
