The darker scenario for Brexit, getting closer and closer. Last chance negotiations have fallen

Trade talks between the UK and the EU have taken a step backwards and expectations that European Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will return to London this weekend to reach a deal may not come true, Agerpres writes.

“Despite intense negotiations over the past 24 hours (fueled by pizza and sandwiches), a UK source told me that the talks have dropped slightly today,” Beth Rigby, political editor of Sky News, wrote on Twitter.

The reporter also quotes a European source who told him that he expects European negotiator Michel Barnier to return to Brussels and then return to the UK over the weekend to reach an agreement, but in light of recent disagreements it is possible so that this does not happen again.

European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier and British chief negotiator David Frost resumed talks in person in London in an attempt to overcome “fundamental differences” and reach a post-Brexit agreement that would allow avoiding a painful situation in which there would be no agreement up to 31 December.

The main points of divergence remain with the EU’s demands to maintain European fishermen’s access to British waters, to establish rules to prevent unfair competition from British companies in the European market and to create a dispute resolution mechanism within of the future agreement.

Brussels and London are now under pressure for an agreement to take effect on January 1, when the UK will cease to apply European rules once the post-Brexit transition period ends. Failure would mean the application of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules in EU-UK trade relations only after this date.
