The Core developers of Ethereum give the Nod to the ASIC-resistant update

The developers of Ethereum Core mentioned a proposal that tried to introduce an update to the Ethereum consent algorithm.

In the Friday meeting, the team discussed the approval of the ProgPoW, an ASIC-resistant proposal that aims to reduce the incentive for miners to use ASICs when they extract ; ETH.

The update would make the use of specialized mining chips unattractive, in particular by optimizing the efficiency of the GPU.

Hudson Jameson, who led the appeal for approval, said that the developers of Ethereum would proceed with the update "unless important problems [are] found with it during the testnet test. "

Ethereum's mining applications (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) have emerged only in the second half of 2018. When mining giant Bitmain released its latest mining device for Ethereum, Antminer E3, the ETH community has started exploring ways to combat the use of ASICs.

The community move to push for ASE-resistant Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP) gained even more momentum when a former Canann Creative engineer announced he would release a new chip called Linzhi.

It is said that Linzhi is a considerably more efficient ASIC chip for the extraction of Ethereum than Antminer E3. The new project claims that their chip consumes only one-eighth of the power that Bitmain's Antminer E3 consumes.

Fight the arms race of ASIC chips.

The ProgPoW proposal is driven by the concerted efforts of hardware manufacturers to develop and launch specific ASIC devices for Ethereum. It is a kind of "arms race" that the core developers of Ethereum will not want to see until the platform adopts the Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm.

The approval will see the marginal advantage that the ASIC miners have on GPU extraction, which would see the reduction in the "arms race" when Ethereum moves to the PoS.

In response to questions about the gap between the distribution of ASIC and GPU awards, a contributor to ProgPoW, one Elsa clarified:

"The ETHhash ASICs on the market can be about 2 times better … those currently on the market that use DDR4 are [marginally better]… The DTH6 ETHhash base set for launch will be ~ 2 times better than any other [chips] existing … but ProgPoW brings that 2x down to 1.1x – 1.2x. "

The proposal has not attracted a lot of rejection from the developer community regarding the call, but has seen some confusion creep up inside the community. There is that grip that such calls are a distraction from hard planned forks.

Some see it as favoring a group (GPU miners) and a "possibility not nothing unnecessary"For a chain division.

The timing of implementation remains uncertain, although call participants have noted that 95 percent of what is needed to move to the next step is ready. The next steps in the timeline are for the client teams who have to complete the "tasks" before the planned implementation.

According to Ethereum Foundation security chief Martin Holst Swende, the move should be taken quickly, as it will "postpone the ASICs for at least a year", giving the platform more time to prepare the preparations for Proof of Stake (PoS).
