Chinese Wang Shangkun (26) had his right kidney removed in 2011. But not to donate. No, he sold the kidney to grant a sincere wish: a new iPhone and an iPad.
The 17-year-old then sold the kidney on the black market for the equivalent of around 3,000 francs, writes the US newspaper “Epoch Times”. “Why do I need a second kidney?” Shangkun told the newspaper at the time. “One is enough!” His decision was publicly discussed.
His mother made him confess
He felt the consequences only a few months later: an infection hit his remaining kidney. The unsanitary conditions during the operation and the lack of subsequent care took their toll.
The young man was operated on illegally in Hunan province, China. When he returned home with his expensive Apple devices, his mother became suspicious and forced him to confess. He then went public with the trade in organs, China’s Xinhua News Agency reports.
Nine people were arrested, according to the news agency, five of whom were subsequently charged with willful harm and organ trafficking.
He urgently needs a kidney
Little consolation for Shangkun, 26. His remaining kidney is threatened with failure. He has since been bedridden and needs to be dialyzed daily to rid his blood of toxins. His remaining kidney can no longer make it on its own. Shangkun could use a new kidney himself now.
China banned the trade in human organs in 2007. Because donated kidneys do not meet needs, the black market has been on the rise for years. (it has C)
