South Sudan: Vice President Mabuza pushes for peace in South Sudan

Vice President David Mabuza is on a working visit to Ethiopia to meet some of the protagonists who are working to achieve lasting peace, stability and development in the Republic of South Sudan.

In his capacity as special envoy in South Sudan, Vice President Mabuza will meet Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali, to promote the full implementation of the revitalized peace agreement in South Sudan.

Abiy is also the president of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD).

"Vice President Mabuza's work visit to Ethiopia takes place in the context of strengthening ongoing political efforts to find lasting peace and development for the people of South Sudan," the presidency said today.

In December, Vice President Mabuza held several bilateral political consultations with heads of state and government within the IGAD member states on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement on South Sudan.

These bilateral consultations saw Vice President Mabuza visiting the republics of Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, where all leaders and other stakeholders expressed the urgent need for full implementation of the peace agreement.

Last September, Sudanese parties and key stakeholders signed the revitalized peace agreement on South Sudan, drawing a roadmap for the cessation of hostilities, the provision of humanitarian assistance, the construction of democracy and peace and lasting stability in South Sudan.

The country, which gained independence from the Sudan in July 2011, has for many years been trapped in an endless civil war that has seen thousands of dead and mutilated, with millions more displaced and displaced.
