PlayStation 5 will finally debut tomorrow in some regions of the world, but it is a fact that many players will continue to enjoy their PlayStation 4 for a few months or even several years.

Sony has vowed not to abandon the huge user base of its current console, which will close the generation with over 113 million units sold worldwide. Despite this, PS4 players remain concerned about their console’s end of life.

For this reason, the company reiterated once again that it still has plans for the PlayStation 4. Therefore, the console is expected to receive games and support for at least another couple of years despite the arrival of the PlayStation 5.

Sony reiterates its commitment to PS4 users

Hideaki Nishino, vice president of planning and management of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has assured that the release of PlayStation 5 will not mark the end for PlayStation 4. His strategy is to support the current generation console for several years.

To do this, they will support intergenerational launches, so the full switch between consoles will take 3 years, according to the manager. Sony will bet on this approach to not abandon the more than 100 million PS4 users.

“The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about 3 years. We have more than 100 million customers on PS4, but we will do our best to move to PS5 as soon as possible,” Nishino said.

Another important detail is that Sony has asked various development studios to create intergenerational games. Therefore, it is possible that many of the early PlayStation 5 titles can also be enjoyed on PlayStation 4.
