Slovakia does not have access to the most modern treatments for lung cancer

There are more and more voices pointing out that Slovakia is full of skilled experts, but they don’t have all the strength needed to use their potential to heal people.

Doctors often just look at their addictive foreign colleagues, who can easily give the patient more modern medicine. And patients are frustrated that if they live elsewhere, they have a better chance of living. Unfortunately, the situation is similar in the treatment of lung cancer.

Poll

You smoke

It lasts a long time

The new coronavirus scares us and can wreak havoc on our lungs, but the fact is that around 2,000 people die from lung cancer every year. The disease is difficult to cure because most people knock on the doctor’s door late – in the fourth stage.

The good news is that the European Medicines Agency has approved 27 new treatments for lung cancer since 2011. However, the optimism about this information must be dampened by the information that only three of it is available in Slovakia.

Modern medicine is already following the path of immunotherapy and is considered a standard abroad, we are still late. According to IQVIA data, for example, while in Germany a new drug can be included in public health insurance, in our country this period is years. But patients don’t have that time.

“I literally had to fight for my modern treatment. However, this struggle was not in vain, because it was thanks to immunotherapy that my condition improved so much that today I can lead a full life. Unfortunately, in Slovakia the patient has to fighting alone for treatment. he fights cancer, he also has to fight with state bureaucracy and, in particular, with insurance companies “. says patient Eva Sládková.

Did you grow up in a smoking family? Can't forgive your partner or colleagues over a cigarette lunch? The smoke from a cigarette that you are not holding threatens you in triplicate: the smoke that rises from the cigarette, from the exhalation of the smoker and to the third from his clothes or hair. It doesn't matter if you are outside or inside. The worst is secondhand smoke in a closed car. Up to 70 toxic substances from the smoke reaching you in this way cause cancer.

How does it work?

How does immunotherapy work? “When we talk about modern lung cancer treatment, we primarily mean biological treatment and immunotherapy. Biologically targeted treatment influences the growth and proliferation of cancer cells based on knowledge of their genetic changes. Immunotherapy uses the patient’s immune system to do so. fight cancer cells “. explained Roosevelt Hospital’s head of pulmonary department, MUDr Michal Urda.

What are the symptoms?

The doctor warns that preventive checks are especially important in lung cancer, because the symptoms of the disease appear relatively late. They are:

– shortness of breath, cough

– cough with blood, chest pain

– hoarseness and fatigue

The conclusion is quite logical: you do not want lung cancer, do not smoke, because although there is a good treatment, you may not miss it. However, it must be said that not all lung cancers are responsible for themselves: “It also occurs sporadically in non-smokers”, says the doctor.

COPD is also destroying us

Other causes of lung cancer include lifestyle, genetic mutations, and a bad environment. According to the pulmonologist doc. MUDr Marta Hájková, for example, Slovakia is struggling with a bad atmosphere.

Inhaling true “fresh air” without dust and other fine particles, which cause, for example, a severe incurable disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is rarely possible.

COPD can also cause home, heating, or kitchen air pollution by burning biomass in poorly ventilated homes.

Cigarettes are also responsible for the disease, not just among smokers. Inflammation in the lungs can also cause so-called passive smoking, i.e. inhaling cigarette smoke.

By the way, People from the Prešov and Košice regions suffer most from COPD, is the least treated in Bratislava. More people die from this disease every year than from lung cancer …

Annoying numbers

Every year he gets lung cancer 3,000 people mostly men. Smoking is mainly to blame, but non-smokers are also sporadically ill.

In developed countries it comes 30% of smokers, in the development of 60%.

Smokers have 5 times greater chance of flu and 2 higher rates of pneumonia.

Are we improving?

Doctors often point out that Slovaks ignore prevention. According to the poll “How are you Slovakia?”, Over the past two years have been more than 73% of people.
