The ShareRing blockchain platform is integrating with Rakuten Travel Xchange, an online travel booking subsidiary of the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten.

The integration will mean that Rakuten Travel Xchange customers will be able to choose to use ShareRing’s sovereign identity app to access bookings at over 600,000 hotels and 200,000 rentals, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

ShareRing said the blockchain-based product allows passports and other travel documents, bank cards, accommodation, flights and vehicle information to be securely stored in one place, accessible only by the user.

Rakuten Travel Xchange customers will also have the option to pay for bookings with cryptocurrencies, the company said.

ShareRing said the app could limit identity and financial theft, reduce fraud and fraud, and allow users to avoid long check-in queues through its “instant” identity verification.

“We are thrilled to partner with one of the largest travel providers in the world that reaches more than a billion members worldwide,” said Tim Bos, CEO of ShareRing. “We look forward to offering our users access to the platform with late security and industry convenience updates.”

The integration is expected to be released in the next two weeks, a ShareRing spokesperson told CoinDesk.

ShareRing’s self-sovereign identity model, also offered as a white label solution, was recently chosen to join the Chinese state-backed blockchain initiative called Blockchain Service Network.
