Sara Ali Khan on getting less screen time in films starring Varun and Ranveer: “Aapki aukat nahin hoti to make such comparisons” – bollywood

More than her screen time, being part of a good story is a priority for actor Sara Ali Khan, who says she isn’t in the film industry to “compete” with her co-stars. Sara, the daughter of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, made her debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s 2018 drama Kedarnath, followed by director Rohit Shetty Simmba’s crime comedy, starring Ranveer Singh.

The 25-year-old actor, whose latest release was Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama Love Aaj Kal, returns to the comedy genre with David Dhawan’s Coolie No 1, opposite Varun Dhawan. Women have successfully directed comedies, with Hema Malini in Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972, Sridevi in the 1980s with Mr India and Chaalbaaz, Karisma Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Raveena Tandon in several David Dhawan films in the 1990s.

Recent Hindi comedies, however, have had little to offer its female leads, with stories revolving primarily around the men, who drive the film and its humor. Asked what her experience – after starring in two great comedies – taught her about space for women in the genre, Sara said she doesn’t compare herself to her co-actors.

“When you work with people like Ranveer and Varun, aapki aukat nahin hoti (you are not able) to make such comparisons. You are just grateful that people like Rohit, David sir, Ranveer or Varun are working with you. You just don’t want to compare these things.

“The time spent in front of the screen doesn’t matter because these people teach you and inspire you a lot. You’re telling a good story, entertaining people, so whoever figured out what joke is a battle I don’t want to get into, “he told PTI in an interview.

Khan also said he considers Simmba as much his film as Ranveer, despite the lead role belonging to the Gully Boy star. He said that while working on a project, his only intention is to improve a film as a collaborative effort.

“You have to own whatever you do. I don’t think it’s confrontation, women against men, me against Ranveer or Varun. It’s a collective experience and energy, which will reflect on a scene and only make the film better. My goal is just that. It won’t go well if I start competing with Ranveer or Varun. ”Coolie No 1, an adaptation of the 1995 hit of the same name, starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, will be out on Amazon Prime Video on December 25th.

From her matchless pairing with Govinda to her expressions, dance moves and comedic timing, Karisma’s contribution to the success of Coolie No 1 is still remembered today. Sara said there was never a temptation to imitate Karisma, who memorably portrayed Malti, a naive woman who is made fun of by Govinda’s coolie Raju, leading to chaos and comedy.

“I was more focused on being directed by David, sir and enjoying the alchemy I shared with Varun. I’m inspired by Karisma, like most of the actors. He is an iconic star, the way he makes masala (potboiler) I don’t think most people can. But I don’t think I can or have tried to copy it.

“It will be stupid because I won’t be able to do this justice and that wasn’t our attempt either.” The actor said that although the new film has a similar setting to that of the original, it is completely new in terms of script and dialogue.

That’s why, Sara said, both she and Varun didn’t attempt to copy Govinda or Karisma. “There will be times when you get flashes of the original but we’re not trying to make a frame-by-frame copy. We are trying to bring some freshness.

“If Varun tried to copy Govinda sir and if I imitated Karisma madam, you would immediately lose that freshness. Instead of copying them, which is not possible, we focused our energies on bringing something new to the table, ”he added.

Speaking about the release of Coolie No 1 on the streamer, the actor said watching the film on a digital platform like Amazon is the “safest way” to watch a movie amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “When I see the songs in the movie, I feel like this is a theatrical movie, which means you want everyone to watch the movie together and have this collective viewing experience.

“The safest way to do this today is to watch movies at home. I don’t want grandmothers or small children to miss the opportunity to watch the movie or make up fifty percent (in a theater). There is nothing better than staying home for Christmas with your family and enjoying the movie, ”he added.

Coolie No 1 is also played by Paresh Rawal, Jaaved Jaaferi, Rajpal Yadav and Johnny Lever.
