Romania, the country with the highest public deficit in the EU

Romania recorded the highest level of public deficit in the European Union in the third quarter of 2018, according to data published on Monday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

In the euro area, the general government deficit stood at 0.5% of GDP in the third quarter of 2018, from a deficit of 0.3% of GDP in the previous three months, while European Union the public deficit is 0.6% of GDP, from a deficit of 0.4% of GDP.

In Romania, the government deficit rose to 3.6% of GDP in the third quarter of 2018, a deficit of 2.3% of GDP in the previous three months and a deficit of 2.8% of GDP in July-September 2017.

In the third quarter of last year, 12 Member States of the EU recorded a public surplus, including Malta (3.8% of GDP), Portugal and Bulgaria (3.6% of GDP) and Luxembourg (3.1 % of GDP).
