Until a PS5-exclusive title appears that takes full advantage of the console’s capabilities and could define the next generation of consoles, fans will likely have to be patient. According to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, it won’t happen until 2022.

When will new PlayStation 5 owners be able to enjoy games for the first time that appear exclusively on the next generation console and are optimized for it? PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan raised this question in an interview with the Russian news agency TASS. According to him, fans will have to wait a bit for PS5 exclusives.

When asked how long he expected the player base to transition from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, Ryan replied:
[…] most gamers who buy a PS5 own a PS4. There are approximately 114 million PS4 consoles worldwide and the number of those that will change will be small for now. But for us, the PS4 community will remain incredibly important in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Because in these three years it will be the largest PlayStation community.

The PlayStation CEO stressed at the same time that the exclusive title would contribute to the immense popularity of the PS4. So Sony will continue to rely on strong and attractive exclusive titles. However, they should then appear in the first three years of the new generation of consoles for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, because Sony would like to continue providing games to the PlayStation 4 player base and keep it as a player base.

Financial considerations in the context of the large PlayStation 4 community underway will ensure that PlayStation exclusives will appear on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in the next two to three years. Consequently, developers must produce two versions of each exclusive title. A game that can take full advantage of the PlayStation 5 hardware will therefore likely be a bit slow in coming.
