As planned, Qualcomm has unveiled in today’s presentation the new processor dedicated to flagships in 2021. Surprisingly, this is Snapdragon 888 and not Snapdragon 875 as expected.
Apparently, Qualcomm has adopted this name, choosing to deviate from sequential growth, being an auspicious name in Chinese culture (this in connection with the fact that the first phone to integrate this CPU will be a Xiaomi). However, the company has not given us too many technical details about the new chipset and tomorrow we will find out all the information in detail.
However, Qualcomm has revealed that Snapdragon 888 uses the third generation 5G modem – X60, which will offer mmWave compatibility for all globally available 5G bands. The modem will also support the aggregation of 5G, global multi-SIM, 5G Standalone, 5G Non-Standalone and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing operators.
The flagship CPU includes the 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, capable of running at 26 tera per second (TOPS). At the same time, it will offer greater performance and efficiency than the previous generation. The AI platform has improved a lot thanks to technology Qualcomm Discovery Hub second generation, incorporating always-on AR processing at low power, delivering new intuitive and intelligent features.
For gamers Snapdragon 888 arrives with the third generation Snapdragon Elite Gaming, improving the performance of the Adreno GPU used on previous models.
The chipset will also offer better performance when it comes to photography. Use technology Qualcomm Spectra ISP, which captures 2.7 gigapixels per second. To stay results in 120 photos with a resolution of 12 mpx per second, the new CPU is 35% faster than the Snapdragon 865.
During the presentation, Qualcomm also demonstrated its 5G capabilities Snapdragon 888 via mmWave 5G. In the demonstration, the drivers controlled two racing cars at a distance of one mile. The demonstration was conducted on a private 5G network developed in collaboration with Verizon and Ericsson. It was created using the Snapdragon X60 modem on the Snapdragon 888 as a reference.
Qualcomm has also confirmed the first manufacturers to launch Snapdragon 888 terminals on board: ASUS, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, MEIZU, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE. At the same time, Xiaomi recently posted on its Facebook page the announcement that Snapdragon 888 will reach the new top series Xiaomi Mi 11.
Strange is the fact that Samsung is not on this list, even though we knew that the new flagships of the Galaxy S21 series will be among the first terminals to integrate the new processor, even if only at the regional level. The Qualcomm event is not over yet, a mid-range processor (Snapdragon 775G, if the name does not change) should debut tomorrow. Also tomorrow we discover all the details on the new top-of-the-range Snapdragon 888 processor, as I said before.
