“I decided to go there because, in the first place, I was drawn to the fact that this object had been hidden in nature for five years,” says David Surber, of Utah, quoted by the BBC. The 33-year-old former US Army infantry officer drove for six hours at night until he arrived, after seeing the Reddit post claiming he had found the exact location.
Tim Slane, who advertised the place, admitted that he knew “that as soon as the place became public, people would visit the area.” “I got some angry messages about revealing the location. If I hadn’t found out, someone else would probably have found out in no time,” he tells the BBC.
Slane says he detected a long, narrow shadow on Google Earth, which matched the 3 to 3.6 meter high metal structure embedded in the reddish rocks, but that this image was not visible in the 2015 satellite images. Several theories have emerged in recent days on social networks, the most unusual, suggesting its installation by extraterrestrials or by a fan of the film “2001: Space Odyssey”, by Stanley Kubrick, or its creation by some minimalist artist, such as the late John McCracken. However, the theory prevails that it will be an art installation not yet claimed by any artist.
Some experts initially suggested it may be an unknown work by John McCracken, who came to live in New Mexico before he died in 2011 and was known for his “plank” sculptures. The gallery owner David Zwirner, who represents him, has come to consider this hypothesis, but the specialists of the gallery “are divided”, considering that it could be by another artist in his honor.
Another artist approached is Petecia Le Fawnhawk, who usually features surreal works photographed in the desert and who lived and worked in Utah. However, the artist has publicly excluded any involvement in the appearance of the object, even though he had already “thought of installing secret monuments in the desert”.
