Peru declares national epidemiological alert for diphtheria

The Ministry of Public Health of Peru has declared the national epidemiological alert, after recording a second death from diphtheria in the country, as stated by the deputy minister of this portfolio, Luis Suarez Ognio, examined the Telesur web portal.

At the press conference, Suárez reported the death of a 69-year-old woman suffering from respiratory symptoms and tested positive.

The deputy minister explained that the Cayetano Heredia hospital denounced the case of the deceased who presented a respiratory condition, “in which the laboratory gave a preliminary result compatible with Corynebacterium diphteriae, the causative agent of diphtheria”.

Similarly, Suárez added that relatives, in the San Martín de Porres district, received prophylactic treatment with antibiotics, tested and vaccinated against diphtheria.

Similarly, the procedure was applied to the relatives of a five-year-old girl who also died of the disease, considered the first reported case in 20 years.

He stated that “the investigation, to date, has not allowed us to identify the source of the infection, that is, we do not know who was the origin of the infection of this girl and of her close family contacts, which tested positive for diphtheria”.

Given the situation, Deputy Minister Suárez stressed that he had taken steps to extend the vaccination area to protect the population of the La Victoria district. / JML
