The European Union wants, through a draft regulation on the protection of the EU budget, to limit or even freeze funding for member countries that present general deficiencies in the rule of law. In the debate held in Strasbourg on Wednesday evening, representatives of political groups expressed their views on the text and announced their voting options.

The report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and the Council on the protection of the EU budget in the event of a general weakness of the rule of law in the member countries was presented in Strasbourg by Eider Gardiazabal Rubial (Social Democrats) on Wednesday evening Petri Sarvamaa ( Christian Democrats), writes news.ro.

He assured that information on the application of this regulation will be received by the European Court of Justice and other European institutions.

With regard to implementation, the Commissioner also said that the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union will discuss the matter. "Everything must be clear, there should be no gray areas, there must also be flexibility to have tools for unexpected situations.The mechanism of the rule of law is a milestone for the financial plan from 2021 to 2027", concluded the commissioner .

Helmut Scholz (Nordic Green Left) said that it is important to protect the EU budget from the lack of the rule of law in the member countries. "It must be transparent and proportionate," said the German deputy.

Schilz's colleague Liadh Ni Riada called for the text to state that there must be "evidence that something is wrong". On the other hand, the Polish Stanisław Żółtek said: "We would like to remain in the EU, but if it becomes a force of occupation, we will withdraw".

Ines Ayala Sender, Social Democrat, said he would prefer direct political sanctions. "If we do not have independent judges, we can not protect European money", he agreed. From the liberal point of view, Anneli Jaateenmaki has appreciated the proposal as good. "There must be evidence that there is a bridge on the rule of law," was his suggestion to fill the text. "I hope that the negotiations with the Council of the European Union will remove the obfuscation to apply the regulation".

Razvan Popa (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, S & D) stated that "the introduction of such regulation is a risky step" and that there must be clearly defined criteria.
