SINGAPORE – A new beginner course to meet the growing demand for talent in blockchain technology will start in Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in February next year.

Intended for professionals, Fintech – Blockchain (Beginner) will include lessons on creating cryptocurrencies, creating a blockchain ecosystem and developing smart contracts.

Students will also explore the impact of emerging blockchain technology on the financial sector.

The lessons will be held by dr. Ernie Teo, former researcher at the IBM Center for Blockchain Innovation in Singapore.

Students will participate in a three-hour session on the evening of a weekday and a six-hour session on Saturday for two months. They will also have to carry out online reading, research and project activities, said Chia. There is not yet a full-time option.

The course, developed by the SP and the Token Economy Association (Tea), aims to "fill the gap in demand for blockchain talent with the right education," said Chia Hock Lai Association president on Friday 21 December.

He noted the growing demand for blockchain developers as "legacy companies and the most promising start-ups try to exploit this technology early on".

For example, the IT giant IBM and Mastercard have deposited more than 80 blockchain technology patents, but "are struggling to find sufficient talent to develop their initiatives," he added.

An intermediate course on advanced concepts such as initial coin offerings, among others, is being worked on. It is expected to be released in April next year, Chia said.

Students who complete the two courses "will be competent enough to join the ranks of blockchain developers," he added.

Tea will help connect students to career opportunities and professional projects, Chia said, adding: "(Experience) comes from practice."
