People like NASA believe that dark matter is an invisible force that holds galaxies and clusters together, and it has been the key to the formation of the Universe. The substance also adds mass to the galaxy, but a mass that cannot be seen or detected with scientific instruments.

About 27% of the Universe is dark matter, but what it is remains an elusive mystery.

However, scientists know it is there because it has mass and gravitational pull.

Now NASA scientists have revealed that Earth may have filaments of “hairy” dark matter gushing from the planet.

NASA said: “The solar system may be a lot hairier than we thought.

“Dark matter is an invisible and mysterious substance that makes up about 27 percent of all matter and energy in the universe.

“Normal matter, which makes up all that we can see around us, is only 5% of the universe.

“The rest is dark energy, a strange phenomenon associated with the acceleration of our expanding universe.”

“When gravity interacts with the cold gas of dark matter during the formation of the galaxy, all the particles within a stream continue to travel at the same speed.”

According to the researcher, hairs have “roots” when they cross a planet that is the densest part of the stream.

The hairs would flow across the planet, leaving “tips” emerging from the surface.

Mr Prézeau said: “If we could pinpoint the location of the root of these hairs, we could potentially send a probe there and get a mine of dark matter data.”

By proving the existence of these hairs, it could help map the insides of distant worlds.

NASA said: “Another fascinating discovery from these computer simulations is that the density changes found inside our planet – from the inner core, to the outer core, from the mantle to the crust – would be reflected in the hair.

“The hairs would have” folds “that correspond to the transitions between the different layers of the Earth.

“Theoretically, if this information could be obtained, scientists could use cold dark matter hairs to map the layers of any planetary body and even infer the depths of the oceans on frozen moons.”
