In Russia, police announced they had arrested murder suspects who robbed and killed 26 elderly women in central parts of the country in 2011 and 2012.

Police announced that 38-year-old suspect Radik Tagirov was a blacksmith with a criminal record for theft.

Tagirov is suspected of being the wanted and nicknamed “Volga maniac” for numerous crimes and murders in areas where it crosses the Volga River.

No statements have yet been received from Tagirov or on behalf of Tagirov.

Police said the suspect was questioned and provided information to his investigation.

The Russian Investigation Committee (SK), which works similarly to the FBI Federal Investigation Bureau in the United States, announced that Tagirov was arrested following forensic investigation and biological analysis and that these studies concluded that crimes against women are been committed by a single person.

The organization also reported that the attacker’s behavior appeared to coincide with that of the suspect and that the decision to arrest Tagirov was the result of a “long and systematic” study.

Tagirov, who lived in the city of Kazan, allegedly entered the victims’ homes as an employee of a water, electricity or gas company and strangled their victims with clothing belts or electric cables.

Last year, the police announced that those who provided information about the killer would receive a reward of three million rubles (315,000 TL).
