Michel Cymes explains the side effects on other diseases

The arrival of a coronavirus vaccine is on everyone’s lips in France. Health is currently only seen through the prism of this disease and resuscitation beds. However, it is not in vain to look at what is happening elsewhere. Especially in countries that are not lucky enough to have the same level of assistance as our country.

In an article in the magazine medicine / science of Inserm, the authors evoke the global deregulation of global immunization related to the epidemic. They refer to other vaccinations. During the first wave in France, parents were reluctant to go to a doctor’s office. It is estimated that more than 93,000 children did not receive the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) e 59,000 teenagers receive the papillomavirus vaccine.

It is not certain that this delay can be made up for. The situation is worse in developing countries: the coronavirus epidemic has completely disrupted already fragile health systems. This situation is not unprecedented. During the Ebola outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2015, twice as many children had died from measles than from the virus because the vaccination campaigns had been suspended.

Deadly Side Effects

Children are quite spared from the coronavirus. However, we are afraid a resurgence of measles and poliomyelitis cases, again due to the end of vaccination campaigns in poor countries. Polio could make a comeback with the eradication of the disease.

Measles is still very much present. The idea is to vaccinate so that children don’t get this disease which can be fatal. The World Health Organization (WHO) suspended mass vaccination campaigns in March 2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during rallies.

Result, more than 120 million children are at risk of not having been vaccinated against measles. Yet it is estimated that a 15% reduction in vaccination for 6 months would lead to 235,000 infant deaths and 12,000 maternal deaths. Coronavirus side effects could therefore claim even more victims in Africa. Especially since the population of this continent is very young: less sensitive to Covid-19, but very sensitive to other viruses.
These startling figures show that the coronavirus outbreak and its dramatic consequences will not stop with the virus disappearing or declining. Even with the arrival of the vaccine which not everyone will benefit from, especially in these disadvantaged countries.
