Malwarebytes: Update fixes offline issue with Windows network printers

After an October update on Windows computers, Malwarebytes’ anti-malware protection solution resulted in blocking network printers and reporting the system as offline. Malwarebytes has now released a beta update so that network printers on the network are accessible again.

On October 20, 2020, a first user logged into the Malwarebytes forum and complained of a conflict with his network printer. The TCP / IP protocol controlled printer was blocked by Malwarebytes and Windows reported that the device was offline. As soon as the web protection function in the Malwarebytes protection software was disabled, printing was again possible.

Other interested people confirmed the problem in the Malwarebytes forum which occurred after a software update from October 2020 with network printers addressed via TCP / IP. In early November 2020, a Malwarebytes employee reported in a forum post and stated that the manufacturer was investigating the issue. Data subjects could disable the “Web Protection” function for the duration of a print job using the context menu.

During testing, the affected user found that disabling the SNMP Status Enabled option in the network printer properties may resolve the issue.

Malwarebytes has been working to eliminate the error since early November 2020, with partial fixes for some versions of Windows released as beta versions. On November 11, Malwarebytes released a new beta version 4.2.3.96 of the security software with component package 1.0.1112. This update is intended to address the offline network printers issue for all Windows systems. This isn’t the first time Malwarebytes has caused a problem by updating its security software. Windows 10 version 2004 had blue screens and performance issues. In 2018 there was the case where software updates led to significant problems.
