The motion to dismiss the Peruvian president was approved with 105 votes in favor, 19 against and 4 abstentions, exceeding the 87 votes required. “Approved the resolution declaring the presidency of the republic vacant”, declared after the vote the head of the Congress, Manuel Merino, who will take over the reins of the country until the end of the current mandate, which will expire on 28 July 2021..

Merino said the measure will immediately be notified to Vizcarra, a president who has had record levels of popularity in his 32 months in office. The new Peruvian president will take office on Tuesday in a plenary session of parliament.
