BTS member Jin (real name Kim Seok-jin) celebrated his 28th birthday today by releasing a solo single the night before.

Entitled Abyss, the song was announced on Twitter Thursday night and released on Soundcloud and YouTube, where it has already been played more than 5 million times.

Jin also wrote a letter to the BTS army, shared on the official BTS blog, in which he talks about being exhausted and not wanting to share with his fans that he was feeling down. He wrote: “I have received congratulations from many people … but I was wondering if I deserved to receive these things.”

He said he received advice and spoke with Big Hit Entertainment founder Bang Si-hyuk (“Hitman” Bang), who suggested he write about how he felt in a song.

The finished product, he says, is “kind of a depressing song that doesn’t fit a birthday, but I thought it would be more embarrassing to release it on a day that wasn’t my birthday, so I actually released it. Abyss.”

The K-pop star’s birthday will be sweet, coming just days after the South Korean government changed a law allowing globally recognized artists such as BTS to postpone their compulsory military service to the age of 30.

Previously, all able-bodied South Korean men between the ages of 18 and 28 were required to serve for about two years. This would have meant that Jin would have had to enlist by the end of 2021.
