It is not possible to allow all the “typical” occasions of Christmas, says the Prime Minister. Italians must also give up skiing holidays in their own country – and other countries should follow suit too, Conte says.

ITalia’s premier, Giuseppe Conte, has clouded the prospect of the winter holidays and a normal Christmas this year in view of the corona pandemic. “It is not possible to allow a winter vacation, we cannot afford it”, said Conte in an interview with the television station La7. A joint European protocol is being worked on with Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The criticisms came from the regions. If the ski slopes were to be closed, it should apply to all of Europe, said the president of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, in an interview with the newspaper “Corriere della Sera” (Tuesday).

Conte did not rule out restrictions on Christmas in the interview with La7 on Monday evening. Travel between the various regions is being worked on, said the non-party leader of the center-left government. The Christmas season, however, requires “ad hoc measures”, he explained. “It is not possible to allow all social events typical of the Christmas period.”

Austrian Finance Minister Gernot Blümel is demanding billions in compensation from the EU in case of cross-border opening of ski resorts only after the Christmas holidays. Italy’s move to open ski resorts from January 10 at the earliest means a loss in sales of € 800 million per week in Austria. “If the EU actually provides for ski areas to remain closed, this means costs of up to € 2 billion. If the EU really wants it, it has to pay for it too, “Blümel said on Tuesday.
