Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Islamic scholar who was jailed for more than two years, was released by the Iranian regime, according to state broadcaster IRIB. In exchange for the Australian’s release, the mullahs obtained an exchange with three Iranians detained abroad.

IRIB did not provide further details on the release. The exchange has not yet been officially confirmed, but the IRIB is considered a well-informed source close to the judiciary. The television images showed the scientist in a transporter, the images are said to have been taken in Tehran.

The University of Melbourne lecturer was arrested in September 2018 after attending a science conference in Iran and sentenced to ten years in prison for spying on Israel and endangering national security. Moore-Gilbert, also a British citizen, had denied the allegations.

All attempts by the Australian government to secure their release through diplomatic channels had failed. The judiciary in Iran is independent and does not engage in political mediation on national issues, he said in Tehran.

There have already been two prisoner exchanges in Iran this year. In February a German and in March a Frenchman was exchanged for an Iranian.

An American historian imprisoned in Iran was also released in December 2019 and in return an Iranian researcher was released from prison in the United States.
