Hermes and Ersa, the “Greek gods” who predicted the moon’s climate

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (THAT) created two space devices that will have the task of predicting the Lunar time in the next missions, scheduled for the year 2024.

Hermes and Ersa, designed by the US and European space agencies respectively, will be installed in the Gateway space station that will orbit around the Moon. This orbiting research center will promote manned exploration and robotics along the lunar south pole in order to prepare humans for the next journey to Mars.

The goal of its production will be to send data to Earth on the climate of deep space. Hermes and Ersa have been designed as two mini weather stations, through which they will share the efforts to monitor space radiation.

Temperatures in space could rise or fall sharply, so the space agency technicians have been concerned to know the situation that astronauts will face upon their arrival at Gateway and to take measures for their protection.

While Ersa will be in charge of locating the higher temperatures, Hermes will take care of the low states prior to the installation of the “power and propulsion element”, as well as “Housing and Logistics Outpost”, the first tools that will work. at the research center, scheduled for activation in 2022.

Hermes, named after the messenger of the Olympians, is a device composed of four instruments that will analyze the depths of space by collecting data, reconstructing the behavior of the solar wind as the weather changes. This component will be directed by the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA, en Greenbelt, Maryland.

Ersa, the goddess of dew in Greek mythology, will study the effects of the solar wind on astronauts and their equipment. This will be possible through the five instruments of which it is composed that will study the lunar particles, such as galactic cosmic rays, neutrons, ions and magnetic fields.

“The deep space environment is harsh, but by understanding space time and solar activity we can adequately mitigate the risks to our astronauts and hardware,” warned Jacob Bleacher, head of exploration at the Mission Directorate for the human exploration and US operations. NASA in “HERMES and ERSA are a perfect example of the synergy between science and exploration,” he added.
