Health Insurance employees are used to mobilizing for the Pink October, a breast cancer awareness operation. Deprived of races, marches and rallies due to the health crisis, they had the idea of making “handmade” pillows to relieve women who have undergone a mastectomy (breast removal). On Friday 35 amateur seamstresses delivered 113 heart-shaped pillows to the Eugène Marquis cancer center.
These pillows were imagined nearly twenty years ago in the United States. Filled with 170 grams of padding, these heart-shaped pieces fit under the arm and relieve pain by reducing strain from surgery. The League Against Cancer has shared a tutorial and pattern on its site for all sewing enthusiasts to make.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Nearly 60,000 breast cancers are detected every year. In Ille-et-Vilaine, 3,000 women are screened every month. Screening is recommended from the age of 50 for all women and can detect the disease at an early stage, including asymptomatic patients.
