Ethereum Classic is closer to Thanos update

Many altcoin projects are turning the page with hard forks like Bitcoin Cash [BCH] and Ethereum Classic [ETC]. While the BCH hard fork is scheduled for November 15th, the Ethereum Classic network update dubbed Thanos will witness the mainnet being activated on November 28th at block 11,700,000.

Thanos ECIP-1099 will be a major network upgrade for ETC which aims to reduce the direct acyclic graph [DAG] dimension for miners when calibrating the epoch length used in DAG calculations. The new ETC co-operative update recommended that all node operators update their current client software. Node operators can choose between Hyperledger Besu v10.20.0 or Core Geth v1.11.7.

The Cooperative added an important notice for operation with OpenEthereum and Multi-Geth, to be updated as the developers of the aforementioned services have “arbitrarily decided to remove support for Ethereum classic”. This will prevent the node operator from connecting to the ETC network after Thanos update in nearly two weeks.

Furthermore, miners must also update their mining software to continue mining the digital asset.

The ETC Cooperative completed the activation of Mordor Testent at block 2,520,000 on October 18.

Thanos ECIP-1099

The update was formerly known as ECIP-1043 [DAG Limit Restriction] which took on a new form of ECIP-1099 [Epoch Calibration]. The team explained:

“By doubling the Ethash era from 30,000 to 60,000 blocks, effectively reducing the DAG limit by half. Now 3GB to 4GB GPUs can now continue mining ETC and continue to attract miners to better protect the network.”

The need for Epoch calibration came from the original aggressive parameter which led to outdated support for GPUs still in use by miners. By calibrating these parameters to reflect current hardware markets and the mining ecosystem it is possible to synchronize the growth of the DAG with commonly used GPUs, allowing the DAG system to continue to function long into the future.
