Ethereum Classic Attack Group to return $ 100,000 to the exchange

The people or group behind the 51% Ethereum Classic attack decided for some unknown reason to return $ 100,000 to the Gate.io encrypted exchange. This is according to a blog post published this week.

Exchange believes that a white-hat hacker may have made a classic Ethereum attack

The most surprising thing is that the company tried to contact the attacker to find the reason behind the return of the money, but failed to get an answer.

This led the exchange to speculate that perhaps the attacker did not attack for personal profit. Perhaps he was a hacker with a white hat who had the intention of reminding people of the risks involved in blockchain consent and the security of hashing power.

The jargon describes a white hacker as an ally or a friendly security specialist – someone who has a strong professional ethic that uses his skills for good and not for selfish personal gain.

After the 51% attack, Date.io published an analysis that indicated that a total of 54,200 ETCs had been transferred, which at the time were worth $ 271,000.

Furthermore, the attack led to Coinbase suspending all transactions involving Ethereum Classic on the platform. On January 8, the exchange issued a statement indicating that it had identified a profound reorganization of the ETH blockchain that involved a double expense of over $ 1.1 million in cryptography.

It is interesting to note that on 5 January the exchange identified a profound reorganization of the Ethereum Classic blockchain chain that included a double expense.

Gate.io also noted that the current hashrate of the Ethereum Classic network was still low and it was possible for attackers to hire sufficient computing power and stage another 51% attack.

To ensure that there is no repetition of the impact on Gate.io the platform has increased the number of confirmations required for the ETC deposit to 4,000. This protects against a similar attack for now.
