“There are many cleaning and disinfection products that have potential harmful effects, especially when used extensively or misused,” Jeffrey Siegel, professor of civil engineering at the University of Toronto, told Global News. .
A new study published this week in the journal “Environmental Science & Technology” has shown that high levels of hydrogen peroxide are found in the air after the use of certain disinfectants.
“The levels we observed in the air were much higher than expected and were sometimes approaching what we consider to be the long-term exposure limit,” Tara Kahan, associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan and co-author of the paper.
Hydrogen peroxide is often used as a substitute for bleach and can cause eye, nose, throat, and skin irritation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. .
“Now, with housekeeping taking place much more frequently and often without proper safety training … this risk is magnified and we should be concerned,” the professor added.
Health Canada reported last May that the number of accidental poisonings has increased since the start of the pandemic.
