Digital auditing helps verify the accuracy of the blockchain

Digital audit can ensure that the data recorded in the blockchain is accurate, helping food suppliers to better meet consumer demand for transparency.

Transparency is important

Consumers are increasingly interested in how their food is made and the culture behind a product or company.

“In light of the recent food scandals, I think we are all aware that consumer behavior towards food has changed. Three quarters of Americans don’t trust labels on food packaging, and 75% of shoppers said they are willing to ditch their favorite food brand and switch to a new one if it gives them more transparency about where their food comes from, as has been done and by whom “, said Maxine Roper, CEO and co-founder of Connecting Food, during the Virtual Poultry Tech Summit 2020.

Blockchain provides farm-to-fork traceability

As a result, many food suppliers are turning to blockchain technology. This digital technology brings transparency from farm to table by storing data in a distributed ledger that is securely linked to the blocks that surround it.

For example, Italy’s largest supermarket chain, Coop Italia, recently implemented blockchain technology to track their organic eggs. By scanning a QR code on the egg carton, customers can read information about the breed of the hen, the packing center and the farm where the egg was hatched.

“Consumers can scan a QR code on the product, connecting the story to the fields, farm or region that produced it,” Roper explained.

The digital check verifies the accuracy of the data

Digital auditing acts as a control and balancing system to verify the accuracy and quality of the data before it is archived by the blockchain technology, reducing human error and eliminating the need to physically check batch data.

“The platform means that a new food brand can identify blockchain-ready suppliers that they can work with to identify products that can provide the internal traceability that food supply chains need and the peace of mind of being fully transparent with the consumer.” , Roper said.
