LEGALIZATION OF INDIA CRIPTOCURRENCE
The Indian government may be about to legalize cryptocurrencies, but with severe measures attached. According to an article published Wednesday by the New Indian Express, an interdisciplinary committee set up by the government in April 2017 to investigate cryptocurrencies, is not in favor of a real cryptographic prohibition that was recommended by the commission in October.
An unnamed official who attended the committee meetings said that he had already held several meetings in which they agreed that cryptocurrencies can not be canceled as completely illegal. He went on to say that the deliberations are still ongoing regarding the direction to be taken.
"We have already had two meetings, there is a general consensus that the cryptocurrency can not be dismissed as completely illegal, it must be legalized with strong pilots.
The second iteration of the group is scheduled for February 2019 with a new solution to be presented to the country's Ministry of Finance. It remains to be seen, if the current situation will change in the coming months.
OTHER INSTITUTIONAL PLAYERS IN 2019
Henri Arslanian, Asia fintech and crypto leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Hong Kong, predicted that many institutional actors will enter the cryptography industry in 2019.
Asked about his thoughts on the criptos for the coming year, Arslanian stated that "there are many exciting things that the cryptography ecosystem does not see the time coming in 2019". He went on to state that he expects the next year to be different from 2018 due to increasing regulatory clarity. Arslanian has also stated that he expects the industry to experience "institutional-level skills that will allow" many other big banks "to enter the crypt space, some by launching their own solutions, others by collaborating or investing in cryptic societies.
Statements have been made by the main institutions, in support of Arslanian's statements. For example, the Nasdaq, the second largest stock exchange in the world, has confirmed its plans to launch Bitcoin futures in the first half of 2019.
