Patients who have suffered from COVID-19 could experience brain aging for up to 10 years or experience a decrease in intelligence quotient (IQ), according to a study from Imperial College London (UK) released Tuesday.

“People who recovered, including those who no longer reported symptoms, showed significant cognitive deficits when checked for age, gender, education level, income, racial and ethnic group, and pre-existing medical conditions,” says the study, which has not been peer reviewed.

Analyzing data from over 84,000 people in the UK, the researchers found that the virus responsible for COVID-19 left “chronic cognitive consequences” in several patients, including many who were considered cured.

Experts question the validity of the study

Scientists who were not part of the research warn that the results of this research should not be conclusive, particularly because the results of cognitive tests before and after the disease were not recorded for the study.

“Participants’ cognitive function was not known before they suffered from COVID-19, and the results don’t even reflect long-term recovery, so any effect on cognition could be short-term,” Joanna Wardlaw, Professor of Neuroimaging, told Reuters. applied at the University of Edinburgh (UK).
