Covid-19 and Games push the AIB market to new highs

As part of its Market Watch and Add-in-Board reporting subscription services, Jon Peddie Research has continuously tracked GPU shipments. Following its recent Market Watch report, JPR is releasing the latest quarterly Add-in-Board report.

The add-on card market increased in Q3 2020 compared to last quarter, and AMD gained market share. Over $ 4.2 billion AIB shipped in the quarter.

Quarterly add-on graphics card shipments increased significantly by 13.4% and 9.1% year-on-year.

Market shares for discrete desktop GPU vendors changed in the quarter. AMD’s market share increased from last quarter, Nvidia increased its position from the previous year.

Market share changes from quarter to quarter and from year to year

Add-on cards (AIBs) use discrete GPUs (dGPUs) with dedicated memory. Desktop PCs, workstations, servers, renders, mining farms, and scientific instruments use AIB. Consumers and businesses buy AIBs from resellers or OEMs. They can be part of a new system or be installed as an upgrade to an existing system. Systems with AIB represent the highest end of the graphics industry. Entry-level systems use integrated GPUs (iGPUs) in CPUs that share slower system memory.

The PC AIB market currently has two dGPU vendors, who also build and sell AIBs. The main GPU vendors are AMD and Nvidia. There are 54 AIB suppliers. They are the OEM AIB customers of the two major GPU vendors, which they call “partners”. Some AIB vendors offer products based on AMD and Nvidia, and others only provide one or the other.

There are private label AIBs offered all over the world. Additionally, around a dozen PC vendors offer AIB as part of a system and / or as an option. Many OEMs offer AIBs as aftermarket products. We have been tracking AIB’s quarterly shipments since 1987. The volume of these cards peaked in 1999, reaching 114 million units when each PC had a graphics AIB in it. This quarter 11.5 million shipped.

“The AIB market reached $ 14.8 billion last year,” said Dr. Jon Peddie. “We expect it to be $ 20.3 billion by 2023. Intel entered the OEM AIB market in the fourth quarter of 2020. The company will introduce a consumer AIB by Q2’21. 2.077 million AIBs have been shipped since 1981.”

The third quarter has the highest volume of shipments for most years.

This quarter it increased by 13.4% compared to the last quarter. This is below the 10-year average of 17.1%. It is higher than the desktop CPU market, which increased 8.5% from the previous quarter.[KM1]

AIB’s sales were stronger than usual. This is due to a couple of factors. One is the continued growth of games. The other is the setting up of home offices thanks to COVID. There may also have been some sales to crypto-miners.

The following charts show the relative changes from quarter to quarter.

Desktop CPU shipments versus desktop AIBs over time

Year-on-year, we found total AIB shipments during the quarter increased by 9.1%. It is larger than desktop CPUs, which fell by -14.2% compared to the same quarter a year ago.

AIB shipments were down, but not as large as PC shipments. This was due to content creation users and continued high demand from gamers. In 2015, AIBs used for cryptocurrency mining spread; AIB sales started to rise while PC sales fell. Over the past two quarters there has been a similar increase in AIB sales compared to PCs.

Despite the abandonment of the PC, due in some way to tablets and embedded graphics, the momentum of PC gaming continues to grow. It is the bright spot in the AIB market. The impact and influence of esports also contributed to market growth and, in the process, attracted new users. Virtual reality continues to be exciting, but it has no measurable influence on the AIB market.

JPR also publishes a series of reports on the PC gaming hardware market, which covers the entire market, including system and accessories, and looks at 31 countries.
