Court case: Trump has called for a new vote in Georgia

Outgoing US President Trump continues with baseless allegations of fraud in the country’s courts. Now his team is calling for a new vote in the state of Georgia. There, meanwhile, former President Obama joins the Senate election campaign.

Current US President Donald Trump wants to get a full new vote in the presidential election in Georgia. A corresponding application has been filed with a court in the state, according to the Trump campaign team. It claims, among other things, that thousands of votes were illegally cast in the elections due to “considerable systematic misconduct, fraud and other irregularities”.

It is one of many attempts by Trump and his Republican allies to skew the state election results in his favor. The courts have dismissed numerous lawsuits, including those in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada. A second recount is underway in Georgia given the tight result. Election officials don’t assume this will change anything in Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the state.

Obama intervenes in the Senate ballot

He urged Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, to vote for the two Democratic candidates in Georgia for the United States Senate. “You have to understand that it’s not just about Georgia,” Obama said at an online event organized by the state’s Democrats. “This is about America and this is about the world.”

Ballot elections for the two Senate seats in Georgia are critically important because they determine the majority in the powerful US Senate. In the two ballot elections on January 5, the two Republican holders, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, will race against Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

Trump is on his way to Georgia today (7pm local time; Sunday 1am CET) to campaign for the two senators from his Republican party.

So far, Republicans under current President Donald Trump have a meager majority of 52 of the 100 seats in the Senate. If the Democrats manage to win two seats in Georgia, there will be a stalemate in this House. Then Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would have the final say in the event of a tie – and the Democrats would effectively have the majority.
