Brazilian authorities have requested Apple to include a charger with the new iPhones they intend to sell in the country, something like this they stopped doing since the arrival of iPhoen 12. This was determined by a government entity from the city of São Paulo (or São Paulo).

The consumer protection agency in São Paulo, Brazil, asked Apple for valid proof that not including the charger in the box of your new iPhone is not harmful for consumers and, furthermore, asked the company to demonstrate what are the real and exact benefits that not including the charger in the iPhone has for the environment. Apple responded, but they didn’t convince the agency with their arguments.

Apple has removed the charger and headphones from the packaging of all iPhones on sale since the launch of the iPhone 12, making sure this helps save space when shipping iPhone loads to different territories, so using less transportation means a reduction of fuel consumption and, in general, an advantage for the environment.

In addition, Apple ensures that most of today’s consumers already have a compatible charger. The Sao Paulo-based consumer protection agency says Apple has not offered enough evidence to support its theories, so they are forced to include the charger in their new iPhone or, otherwise, in principle will be fined.

The decision rests with São Paulo alone, but authorities across the country are investigating the case and could make the same decision. In France, however, the law requires them to include headphones in the box, something Apple had also ruled out in iPhones they have been selling since late 2020. [Procon-SP vía 9to5Mac / La Nación]
