Today, Friday, the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service announced the signing of an agreement between Ethiopia and Israel on bilateral cooperation in the field of intelligence and security, including the fight against terrorism and the exchange of information.

According to the Ethiopian news agency “IA”, the director general of the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service, Dimilash Gebremishael, and the Israeli Deputy Minister of Public Security, Gadi Yifarkan, discussed the modalities of mutual cooperation .

The two sides agreed in their discussions on cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa, information exchange, technology transfer and capacity building.

Demilash said that cooperation between Ethiopia and Israel in the field of intelligence and security will play an important role in the fight against terrorism and in achieving stability and security in the Horn of Africa as a whole.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Deputy Minister of Public Security, Gadi Yefkan, said that Ethiopia plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the region and that Israel is keen to strengthen its relations with Ethiopia in matters of security and intelligence.

The Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service has indicated that the cooperation agreement reached between Ethiopia and Israel should be implemented soon.

Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Demiky Mekonnen and Israeli Deputy Minister of Public Security also exchanged views on deepening bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Israel today.

Yefkan said Israel supports Ethiopia in comprehensive reform in all fields, adding that his country collaborates with Ethiopia in the fields of culture and tourism, as well as science and technology.

The Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister said the Ethiopian government is committed to deepening existing relations with Israel, expressing its appreciation for Israel’s broad support for Ethiopia.

This comes amid a notable increase in cooperation between the two countries. In September last year, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, agreed to understandings and agreements to strengthen cooperation and intra-trade ten times its current size.

Ahmed said his country “looks forward to Israeli investors contributing in key sectors, including irrigation, water and energy.” For his part, Netanyahu stressed that his government is looking forward to strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister said: I want to give life to our bilateral relations, according to common interests, and direct them towards a strategic partnership. We are looking for Israeli investors to contribute in key sectors, including irrigation, water, energy, navigation and modernization of the agricultural sector in Ethiopia.

He added that cooperation between Ethiopia and Israel goes beyond bilateral relations to reach regional and international issues, and Ethiopia will work through a dynamic partnership to promote regional and international peace and security.

While Netanyahu said that, in Israel, Ethiopia is seen from a new point of view, underlining that “the historical relationships that prevail between our two peoples are distinctive relationships, because they are strengthened by a human bridge made up of 150,000 Israelis of origin who carry Ethiopian culture and Ethiopian pride.
