Swedish authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of a woman in her seventies, suspected of having kept her son locked up at home for 28 years. It was discovered, according to the Swedish press, in an apartment on the outskirts of Stockholm with infected wounds, malnutrition and damaged teeth, reports Agerpres.

“The mother is suspected of deprivation of liberty and personal injury,” police spokeswoman Ola Osterling said.

The son, now nearly 41, “has been locked up for a long time” in the family apartment, located in Haninge, a suburb of the capital Stockholm, he said.

According to Expressen and Aftonbladet, the woman held him in custody for 28 years after he dropped out of school when he was 12.

“The alert was given by a family member after seeing his son,” the prosecutor’s office confirmed in a statement.

According to Swedish media, the man had infected leg injuries, could barely walk or talk and had no teeth. Police did not confirm these details but said the woman’s son was hospitalized.

“It was urine, dirt and dust. The smell was bad (…) Nobody had cleaned in years,” according to the person who made the discovery, quoted anonymously by Expressen.

“I am shocked, my heart is broken, but at the same time I feel relieved. I have been waiting for this day for 20 years because I realized that he has complete control over his life, but I never imagined it. I am thankful that he has received help and they will survive, “he said.
