BERLIN (Reuters) – NATO must not jeopardize peace negotiations for Afghanistan by prematurely withdrawing troops from the war-torn country, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said ahead of a virtual meeting with his colleagues in the BORN.

“As a NATO partner, we want to make sure we tie further troop reductions in Afghanistan on clear terms,” he added on Tuesday.

“To safeguard what we have achieved so far, we must not take rash action,” said Maas.

“This is why we ask the alliance to look very closely at the extent to which the conditions for a further withdrawal have been met to avoid sending the wrong message about the peace process.”
