The death Thursday night of a black man beaten by white security guards at a Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre (south) triggered a wave of outrage in Brazil, which celebrates Black Awareness Day Friday, AFP reports.

A recording made by a witness, broadcast by the media and on social networks, shows the moment when Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, receives several punches in the face from a security guard, while the other holds him. In other images, paramedics can be seen performing a heart massage on the man lying in front of a supermarket entrance and who died there.

According to the military police, Freitas threatened a supermarket employee who called the security guards. The two security guards were arrested. One of them is a military police officer who works outside the program for a security company.

The Brazilian branch of the Carrefour group expressed regret over Freitas’ “brutal death” and said it would take “appropriate measures to hold those involved in this criminal activity accountable.”

This tragic event has sparked indignation on social media and will be at the center of the events scheduled for Friday on the occasion of Black Awareness Day, a celebration in several states.

In Brazil, the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery in 1888, more than half of the 212 million people are black or mestizo. According to the “Atlas of Violence”, published in August last year, homicides among blacks increased by 11.5% between 2008 and 2018, while among whites they decreased by 12.9%.

Freitas’ murder has fueled tensions in several countries over racism and police brutality, following large-scale protests following the death of African American George Floyd in late May in Minneapolis during a brutal arrest.
