Samsung may drop one of its best smartphone lines next year

Galaxy Note, known for its large screen and a stylus for taking notes, is one of two premium phone series from Samsung, the other being the more compact Galaxy S.

Currently, the South Korean tech giant has no plans to develop a new version of the Galaxy Note for 2021, three unnamed sources said.

Instead, the flagship model of the Galaxy S series, S21, will have a stylus, and the next version of Samsung’s foldable phone will be compatible with a stylus, which will be sold separately, a source said.

A second source said the company’s development efforts, which would normally have been directed at Notes, will now be channeled into the foldable phone range.

Samsung declined to comment.

Tom Kang, an analyst at research firm Counterpoint, said sales of the Note series will drop from one-fifth to 8 million this year, while S-series sales are expected to decline by 5 million to less than 30 million.

“Demand for premium products has declined this year and many people are not looking for new products,” he said.

The Galaxy Note 20 launched in the US this year with a price tag of $ 999, the same as the Galaxy S20, while the iPhone 12 starts at $ 799.

Samsung first released Notes in 2011.
