Apple plans to move some of its iPad and McBook production from China to Vietnam to minimize the impact of the trade war between Washington and Beijing, Reuters reported Thursday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

According to information, the electronic product manufacturer Foxconn will make this move after a request made by the American company.

“The measure was requested by Apple,” explained the source, who declined to reveal his identity. “He wants to diversify production after the trade war,” he added. He also assured that Foxconn plans to produce televisions for clients such as Japanese multinational Sony in the Vietnam plant, a business that will start between late this year and early 2021.

Trump’s footprint

The news, which Apple and Foxconn have not yet commented on, comes at a time when President Donald Trump’s outgoing administration is encouraging US companies to move manufacturing out of China, the British agency noted.

In this sense, he recalls that the Trump administration has increased import tariffs on electronic products manufactured in the Asian giant and has limited the supply of components made with American technology to Chinese companies that it considers a national security risk of the North American country.

Some Taiwanese manufacturers, such as Foxconn, have transferred – or are considering to do so – part of their production from China to nations like Vietnam, Mexico or India so as not to be affected by the trade war between the two powers.

According to the source, Foxconn is building assembly lines to produce iPad tablets and McBook laptops at its plant in Northeast Vietnam’s Bac Giang province to be ready for the first half of 2021.

Last August, Liu Young-way, president of Foxconn, told his investors that the trade war between China and the United States had divided the world in two, so his company aimed to provide “two sets of supply chains.”
